School tours on Robben Island
By Petrus Jacobus van der WaltStudent Encounters with History: A Day on Robben Island
“You can feel it in the walls.”
That’s how one high school learner described their visit to Robben Island — an unforgettable journey that turns South African history from textbook pages into a lived experience.
Our Riverlodge student tours begin at the Clock Tower at the V&A Waterfront, where learners board the ferry with anticipation and excitement. As Cape Town’s skyline fades behind them, they know this is no ordinary outing.

Upon arrival, students are welcomed by passionate guides, many of whom are former political prisoners or historians, offering first-hand insight into South Africa’s long walk to freedom.
From the limestone quarry where Nelson Mandela toiled, to the very cell he occupied, each stop is layered with meaning. But what truly transforms this experience is the engagement: Q&A sessions, deep reflections, and powerful conversations.
And for selected groups, the journey doesn't end there.
Students can participate in an overnight stay on Robben Island, where they spend the night in the old prison facility. This unique experience includes a special evening session with Christo Brand, Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard, and Andrew Russell, leadership author of “The Leadership We Need.”

Their stories, insights, and dialogue spark unforgettable discussions among students on ethics, leadership, and transformation. This immersive experience makes history personal — and leadership real.
And as part of the Riverlodge Backpackers educational tour program, it’s safe, affordable, and professionally guided — designed for maximum impact and learning.
