Empowering the Next Generation: Riverlodge Backpackers Pioneers New Paths in Youth Tourism
By Reabetswe RamakalimaBridging education and tourism through experiential learning, accredited skills training, and global eco-tourism exchanges for South Africa’s youth.
In a bold move to reshape the future of the local travel industry, Riverlodge Backpackers in Cape Town has unveiled a comprehensive partnership initiative. This program is designed to transform how students and young professionals engage with the tourism sector by bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience.
The initiative aims to ignite a lifelong passion for South Africa’s rich heritage while providing tangible career pathways for the youth.
A Curriculum Beyond the Classroom
At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to experiential learning. Riverlodge offers tailor-made, affordable excursions that align with national curriculum goals, enriching students' understanding of:
• History and Culture: Immersing learners in the diverse narratives of South Africa.
• Geography and Environment: Providing first-hand exposure to unique landscapes.
• Logistical Excellence: Riverlodge manages all safety protocols, transport, meals, and
lodging for a seamless experience.
Accredited Training: Building Job-Ready Skills
Moving beyond simple tours, the partnership introduces formal vocational training through the Skills and Tourism Education Development Trust (STEDT). Targeted at students in Grades 10–12, the program offers qualifications aligned with the National FET Certificate: Tourist Guiding.
To accommodate busy school schedules, classes are held online from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM,
Monday to Thursday. Students can earn certifications in specialised fields such as:
• Front of House & Hospitality.
• Field Guiding and Tourist Guiding.
• Travel Agency Operations.
• Sales & Marketing in Tourism.
A Global Vision: The International Exchange
Riverlodge has expanded its reach by presenting the STEDT International Exchange & EcoTourism Training Program to the Skål Africa Leadership Team. This three-month vocational program hosts 12 participants per intake in the Western Cape, equipping them with practical skills in sustainable and adventure tourism.
Participants engage in hands-on activities, including:
• Marine Eco-Tourism: Shark cage diving and whale boat operations.
• Wildlife Conservation: Working at the African Penguin Sanctuary and participating in
beach clean-ups.
• Community Education: Leading environmental workshops in local schools.
"These experiences aim to inspire pride in our country's rich tourism heritage and guide students toward purpose-driven careers." — Elle Mojaje-Bosman, General Manager of Riverlodge Backpackers.
Supporting Educators and Safety
The program utilises a "multiplier effect" model: for every 10 students enrolled, one tourism teacher receives free accredited training. This ensures that sustainable knowledge remains within the school district. Additionally, Riverlodge provides a comprehensive safety net, including risk assessments, emergency protocols, and fundraising guidance for schools.

Riverlodge Backpackers is currently inviting school districts and Skål Africa chapters to explore how this partnership can align with their development goals.
