UBUNTU
A typically South African term, the word township refers to the country's many satellite settlements created by a policy of segregation. People were forced to move into the townships under difficult circumstances during Apartheid. The establishment of a new democracy in 1994 brought about a new attitude in the townships. Today, townships are flourishing towns where people take pride in their homes, their surroundings and themselves. People have found creative ways to rise above their conditions. People use waste products like empty cans, bottle tops, paper and scrap metal to create pieces of art and crafts. They even find creative ways to decorate their homes with these items. When visiting a township, ensure you get to see the studios where the arts and crafts are created. Seeing the creative process unfold is a really great experience. The people genuinely enjoy their work and visitors are always greeted with a smile. A visit to the local shebeen (restaurant/bar) is almost compulsory. Here you can enjoy the local treats like samp and beans, wood fried meat and morogo (wild spinach). The townships have a vibe. The young people have created a unique way of communicating. There is a certain style to the dress. Kwaito (South Africa's answer to house music) is the preferred music. Township life is based on a sense of community and belonging. The community supports each other and success of the individual is seen as the success of the community. This is referred to as Ubuntu (togetherness). People are proud of who they are, where they live and their lifestyle. People are positive about the future and see the opportunities rather than the stumbling blocks. This is the generation that has found a way to accept the past, live in a culture based on tradition, yet able to live in a modern world. This is the face of the new South Africa.
